Caterpillar, founded in 1925, is one of the biggest names in power generation. Cat diesel engines power Cat's own generator sets and are also supplied to many generator packagers and OEMs, so Cat filter numbers appear on gensets sold under many different names. Cat generator sets are used in data centres, hospitals, mining sites, construction projects, rental fleets, and utility backup around the world.
Cat also publishes planned maintenance (PM) kits for specific engine and generator models, which makes it easy to see exactly which filters each engine uses. The numbers in this guide come from those published kits and are among the most commonly requested Cat filters for generator sets.

While exact filter part numbers depend on the specific engine series and build, the following Cat numbers appear frequently in generator set maintenance kits:
These numbers are useful references when identifying the correct replacement. Always confirm the exact filter by engine serial number or existing filter part number when possible.
Cat sells complete PM kits for generator sets, which bundle the oil, fuel, water separator, and air filters for a given engine. The kit numbers below are commonly used as a shortcut when ordering.

Cat labels many of its filters by efficiency, such as standard efficiency, advanced efficiency, high efficiency, and ultra high efficiency. This matters because the grade is matched to the engine's fuel system and oil requirements. Modern common-rail fuel systems need the finest fuel filtration, while older mechanical engines may use a lower grade. Substituting a lower-efficiency filter can let particles through to injectors and bearings, so a replacement filter must match the original grade and not just the thread and size.
Oil filters. Replace the oil filter with every oil change. Cat's published PM kits are built around 500-hour services for many generator engines. Some engines, such as the C18 and 3406, use two oil filters per service, so replace them together.
Fuel filters and water separators. Replace the secondary fuel filter and the water separator at the same interval and drain the separator regularly. Many Cat generator engines use a primary water separator and a secondary filter, and neglecting the first stage quickly overloads the second.
Air filters. C13, C15 and C18 engines use more than one air filter element. Check the restriction indicator and replace elements on schedule or when restricted, particularly in dusty, desert, or construction environments.
Standby units. Standby generator sets run only briefly, but filters still age and fuel degrades. Replace filters at least once a year, even if the hour meter shows few hours, and test the unit under load.
Service intervals depend on the engine model, oil specification, fuel quality, load profile, and whether the generator set is used for standby, prime, or continuous duty. Always follow the operation and maintenance manual for your specific generator set.
What oil filter does a Cat C15 generator use? Cat's C15 genset PM kit uses oil filter 1R-1808, the secondary fuel filter 1R-0749, and a water separator, along with primary air filters. Verify against the engine serial number.
What fuel filter does a Cat C4.4 generator use? Cat's published kit for C4.4 generator sets lists the fuel filter element 360-8960, with two used per service, along with oil filter 7W-2326.
Are the same Cat filters used on non-Cat generator sets? Often yes. Because Cat engines are supplied to other generator builders, the same oil, fuel, and air filters can appear on gensets sold under other names. Always identify the filter from the engine, not the generator brand.
Can aftermarket filters be used on Cat generator sets? Yes, if they meet or exceed the original efficiency grade, flow, and pressure ratings. Check warranty terms and any service agreement requirements first.
For generator set owners, rental companies, and distributors sourcing replacement filters for Cat engines and generator sets, ADAOER Filter manufactures fuel, oil, air, and hydraulic filters for generator sets and other diesel machinery, and supports OEM/ODM development for custom specifications. Cross-reference lists are available on request.
Brand names and part numbers are used for identification and compatibility reference only. Caterpillar, Cat, Perkins, Cummins, Fleetguard, and FG Wilson are trademarks of their respective owners. Part numbers vary by engine series, build, and production date, so always verify the correct filter against the engine serial number or the existing filter before ordering.
